He was a graduate of Purdue University and a retired Marine Corps major. During World War II, he served at Guadalcanal and landed in an amphibious assault on Okinawa Shima, Ryukyu Islands. After the Japanese surrender, he served with the U.S.

Army in China and was decorated by the Chinese government. He later served in Japan. Locally, he taught biology at Boca Ciega High School and worked at Bette Britt Associates Realty Inc.
